What is hyperterminal? Hyperterminal is a command line program used to launch network connections. These connections allow you to transfer files, connect to the internet, or carry out other tasks on your computer without having to use an operating system. This software has been around for decades while continuously evolving with new features and functionalities. It can be found on most operating systems and hardware components of personal computers, typically in the C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft\\Windows NT/2000/XP directory. Along with its predecessors HyperTerminal Express and HyperTerminal Pro, it has been the dominant terminal emulator for over three decades. It is commonly used to connect to a modem and other serial communication ports such as those that might be found on a terminal server, Ethernet network cards, or network adapters. What is Serial? The term "serial" refers to the communication line created by electronic components through which data is transmitted. Without electronic components, there would be no communication between two computers. Put simply, a "serial port" is a physical connection between a computer and the external circuit board/network interface device that enables communication over a physical wire. The specific type of wire or port can vary widely between different hardware manufacturers but they all use the same basic concept of sending data from one side of the wire to another. What is a terminal server? A terminal server is a piece of computer hardware that acts as a network-connection point for several computers. In essence, it allows multiple hosts within a network to access the same physical connection, connecting them to each other. It can be seen as a sort of router. The host computers that share the same terminal server either have their own physical connections, or the external port connects to one of the serial ports on the host computer without an intervening supporting device such as a hub or switchboard. What is Hyperterminal Private Edition? HyperTerminal Private Edition is a terminal emulator for serial devices created by Microsoft Corporation. It provides basic modem control and can be used for connecting to ISP's via dial up modem or direct connection to the internet using an ethernet card. The term "private edition" is used because it does not include some of the more advanced features found in the commercial version. The program only allows the user to log into an ISP, however it does not provide any encryption, which requires further software support outside of HyperTerminal. The program also allows the user to log into a host or server through telnet or ssh (if supported by your network). What is serial communication? Serial communication involves the transmission of data by using the physical lines in a computer. The lines are normally in the form of RS-232, which are used to connect cables between devices such as modems or ports. HyperTerminal can send and receive data through these lines.
